From August 22nd to 23rd, 2015, an Ubuntu mobile hackathon was held in Shenzhen. The participating geeks were free to group and use the Ubuntu SDK to develop creative applications that can run on Ubuntu phones. In between, geeks Joseph Wang ingenuity to use open source 3D printer is people Rapiro, through an App developed its own on-site, the robot can be issued a similar sound as "Star Wars" R2D2, and can interact with the user. Ubuntu is a Linux operating system based on desktop applications.

Joseph Wang named his project MrRobot. His creation is completely around the open source robot Rapiro. This is a very interesting open source DIY robot suite that relies on a Raspberry Pi, a camera module, and a series of servos. All of Rapiro's mechanical parts are 3D printed , and its STL files can be downloaded for free here.

In the hackathon, Joseph first started with Rapiro and developed a robotic solution based on Ubuntu touch applications, adding a whole new feature to this small 3D-printable robot. It can make a sound to people, you can interact with it by shaking or touching your phone. “The MrRobot project is an Ubuntu mobile app that gives the robot voice, touch and pan control so users can interact with the Rapiro robot.” Joseph, “This project was spent 28 hours on my Ubuntu Shenzhen hackathon. Completed."

More importantly, Joseph has decided to write a tutorial that will allow everyone to print out their own robot in 3D and install an interesting piece of software for it. And you can learn a bit about programming, hacking, and app building. It also teaches you how to use the Raspberry Pi, which is quite important in some 3D printing projects.

But you need to prepare in advance, including an Ubuntu phone with Ubuntu Touch system, a Raspberry Pi with Wi-Fi Dongle and Raspbian, a RAPIRO robot (3D printing, assembly), Ubuntu SDK, Arduino IDE ( Integrated development environment), and the Wit.ai API. You need to use them to build the applications you need.

As Joseph explained, he provided three interactive options in the project. “The first is a touch screen that allows the user to directly touch the GUI to control the robot. Secondly, an accelerometer that reciprocates like a jitter can be detected, which can also trigger some behavior of Rapiro; finally there is a control at the bottom of the user interface. The sound button, when you touch the button, it starts recording the sound, and clicking here will complete the recording."
