The crackdown in the food sector is rampant, and the board market also needs to be counterfeited. Non-MDI glue-bonded ordinary wood-based panels are unlikely to achieve zero formaldehyde; true zero-formaldehyde wood-based panels exist, but consumers must learn to pick.

Confused with the "zero formaldehyde" scorpion

A few days ago, the author found in the major furniture market that there was a wave of “counterfeiting marketing” in the furniture market, and even a “fake concept” marketing trend. A small number of traditional furniture merchants and wood-based panel industry people are making waves in the wind, trying to make ordinary man-made The board is labeled with the concept of “zero formaldehyde”, and the finished furniture made from such boards is then sold to consumers at a high price.

As is known, the vast majority of ordinary artificial boards on the market, such as composite boards, triple plywood, plywood, etc., are all bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin using formaldehyde as a synthetic raw material. Due to the chemical instability of the urea-formaldehyde resin, as long as the artificial board using the urea-formaldehyde resin can not avoid the natural decomposition of the urea-formaldehyde resin during the use of the sheet to produce formaldehyde, it is impossible to achieve "zero formaldehyde".

What's more, some merchants who are good at "packaging" apply ammonia-smoked treatment to inferior plates with poor environmental protection grades, or spray formaldehyde sealants on the surface so that the plates can be tested for lower formaldehyde emission. As a result, the concept of “zero formaldehyde”, “health”, “environmental protection” and “green” was adopted. Compared with ordinary plates, this "specially processed" inferior sheet is more harmful to consumers. Because the inferior sheet uses a large amount of urea-formaldehyde resin, "special processing" is only a short-term cover treatment of the free formaldehyde in the sheet, and there is nothing to do with the formaldehyde released by the long-term decomposition of the sheet. Once the "masking period" is over, formaldehyde will be released explosively.

Therefore, when consumers buy furniture and choose plates, they need to know relevant knowledge and avoid being deceived.

"Environmental protection", "ecological", how many lies, fake name!

Environmental protection and health are the trends in furniture consumption in recent years. Taking advantage of the "green", "environmental protection" and "ecology" and other large-scale flags, holding various types of "certification", "qualification" and other authentic and difficult to distinguish proof, a few operators often ignore the facts, to the lack of professional knowledge Ordinary consumers carry out false propaganda, such as: "Our cabinets are made of solid wood panels, very environmentally friendly, absolutely free of formaldehyde."

In fact, the so-called "solid wood board" in the market is not 100% of whole logs, but blocky wood scraps (such as large core boards), or wood sheets (such as multi-layer boards) are glued with urea-formaldehyde resin and other adhesives. They differ from particleboard and MDF only in the degree of comminution of the wood.

According to industry experts, the formaldehyde in the furniture wood-based panels is derived from the adhesive in the board, namely urea-formaldehyde resin. The synthetic raw materials for urea-formaldehyde resins are urea and formaldehyde. Urea-formaldehyde resins are widely used in wood-based panels because of their good bonding effect and low cost. But its biggest drawback is that it is easy to break down. Urea-formaldehyde resin is continuously decomposed during the use of the board, and it becomes the source of formaldehyde release from furniture.

At present, some grades of higher grades use a small amount of other gum or formaldehyde trapping agent in the urea-formaldehyde resin to reduce the use of urea-formaldehyde resin and achieve a higher environmental protection grade. However, due to the negative impact of these additives on the bond strength, the addition ratio is also limited. On the other hand, formaldehyde release is still present as long as the urea-formaldehyde resin is still used in the sheet. At present, most of the plates that claim to be “environmentally friendly” are only E1 grade plates.

So, is “zero formaldehyde” really a complete false propaganda?

Scarce but exist, polish the eyes and select "zero formaldehyde"

Industry experts told the author that at present, only wood-based panels made with MDI can be called “zero formaldehyde” plates in the true sense.

MDI's strong bonding effect can completely replace urea-formaldehyde resin. Moreover, MDI is an extremely stable polymer monomer which can form a stable combination with plant fibers to form 100% solids. Therefore, there is no defect that the urea-formaldehyde resin is easily decomposed, and there is no problem of formaldehyde release.

At present, there are two major brands of wood-based panels manufactured by MDI in China. One is the “Wanhua Hexiang Board” produced by Wanhua Ecological Board Co., Ltd., a company directly under the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, which is mainly used for furniture manufacturing and decoration. The second is foreign investment. The OSB oriented strand board produced by the company Lindson is mainly used for construction and packaging.

In addition to using MDI instead of urea-formaldehyde resin, both companies have used straw fiber instead of wood fiber. It can completely replace wood panels in terms of performance, so it can be regarded as a "real" pure environmentally friendly product that is extremely beneficial to the human body and society.

On the website of Wanhua Hexiangban, we saw that the company's slogan is “plates that do not release formaldehyde” rather than “zero formaldehyde”. The person in charge of the company explained that this is because formaldehyde has the difference between “content” and “release amount”. The materials from natural life have a trace amount of formaldehyde, and the straw of Wanhuahexiang board also contains a very small amount of natural formaldehyde. "Zero Formaldehyde" means that the amount of release is zero for the fragrant board. Therefore, "the plate that does not release formaldehyde" is a more rigorous statement.

He also introduced that the "zero formaldehyde" board should have the "undetected" certificate of the national authoritative testing organization, the NAF certificate of the US CARB. Consumers should carefully identify during the purchase process, and must not believe in "fudge".

Due to the problem of room volume, ventilation conditions and degree of decoration, excessive use of artificial boards makes it easy to form formaldehyde accumulation in the living environment, especially in bedrooms and children's rooms. It is extremely harmful to the body, and serious cases may cause cancer, leading to leukemia and uremia. , colon cancer, brain cancer and other diseases. This may be the fundamental reason why merchants are competing to promote "zero formaldehyde." But consumers need to polish their eyes when buying, beware of being deceived.
