Biodegradable aliphatic polyesters developed by Procter & Gamble (P&G) will begin industrial production in 2004. In March 2003, a large number of samples will be provided for evaluation and application development. Efforts in development have focused on achieving low-cost fermentation to achieve the predetermined specifications of the polymer. P&G is currently working with commercial companies and research institutes on a global scale.
Nodax is a polyhydroxyalkanoate-based product that can be degraded under aerobic or anoxic conditions, has alkaline digestibility, and its good surface properties can be used for printing. This series of products have the appropriate mechanical properties and high mutual solubility, the latter can make these products combined with other resins to provide better performance. Nodax can be made into a variety of applications - fibrous and non-woven fabrics, foamed plastics, synthetic papers, films, injection molded and blown pellets.
P&G will issue licenses for different production and application aspects of Nodax products. P&G's goal is to compete with petroleum-based biodegradable packaging products on the price, with a predetermined cost of 1.00-2.50 USD/kg.
