Researchers have found a new way to make important parts of the radar production. An advanced 3D printer can produce an electronic device capable of filtering electromagnetic radiation through conductive ink. The horizontal tube uses a vacuum cleaner to remove excess ink. With the new printing process, various electronic devices can be manufactured and produced at a lower cost, while producing more forms.

We can now add radar technology to the list of strange but useful objects that can be made using 3D printing technology . Printing complex and sophisticated radar system electronics onto plastic products will greatly reduce system cost and increase its use. This is not only good for the military, but it can also be used in a variety of civilian applications, such as weather monitoring radars and self-driving cars. But printing such electronic devices that can handle high-frequency radio waves faces an important challenge: to develop new "inks" with accurate electrical properties.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell Laboratories (sponsored by Raytheon), said they found an effective solution: a new type of "functional ink."

They use this ink-printed device to generate or detect radio waves of a specific frequency (a basic performance of radar) after alignment. The radar system operates by transmitting radio waves and then returning the signals in the path after the radio waves hit the target object.

The new ink is a specific type of capacitor (called a transformer or varactor). Researchers believe this is the first full-print varactor. The varactor is the basic electronic component of a specific tunable electronic device used in military radar systems, car collision avoidance systems, and cell towers.

A phase shifter is one of these devices that electronically manipulates the beam of a phased array radar system. Another device that has been printed due to the development of new inks is the frequency selective surface, which is essentially a filter that blocks electromagnetic radiation at a specific frequency or allows radiation to pass through. Such filters can block some unwanted radiation from interfering with the radar system and can also be used to build barriers such as hospitals in a particular environment.

Christopher McCarlo, one of the directors of the Raytheon UMass-Lowell Research Institute, said that making these systems through printing technology can ultimately reduce manufacturing process costs and increase manufacturing speed. The bottleneck is that high-performance electronic devices are generally made of materials manufactured at high temperatures, and such high-temperature manufacturing methods are not suitable for plastic products.
