Recently, four European Plastics Industry Associations have cooperated to launch a research and development project to improve polymer melt fluidity by applying ultrasonic vibration.
The project was developed to reduce the energy consumption and cost of injection molding. Through ultrasonic vibration, the viscosity of the plastic melt can be reduced, and the melt flow length can be increased, thereby reducing the injection pressure and the clamping force of the injection molding machine, reducing the molding energy consumption, enabling the wall thickness of the highly-filled product to be thinned, and reducing the amount of raw materials, thereby reducing the parts. Cost of production.
The project plans to produce a prototype of a low-cost plastic melt ultrasonic system that can be connected or retrofitted to the mold. Although the initial research of this system focused on injection molding, this technology can also be applied to plastic extrusion. This project is expected to last for three years. The four associations involved in research and development are the British Polymer Machinery Production and Sales Association, the Spanish AVEP Polymer Processing Association, the Danish Danish Plastics Federation and the Italian Plastic Machinery Society. Also involved in the project are UK UPM Machinery, Italian BMB Brrahi, Dutch DSI Plastics, and Italian CESAP.
