Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan has developed a new technology that uses laser welding of stainless steel plates. The company successfully welded 10 mm stainless steel plates with an iodine laser at a speed of 1.2 meters per minute. The iodine laser produces meters with a wavelength of 1 micron and a power of 8.5 kilowatts. Using this method to weld stainless steel plates, the welding speed is more than 3 times faster than arc welding. In addition, since the wavelength of the iodine laser is much shorter than the wavelength of the carbon dioxide laser, the plasma generated during the welding process absorbs little energy, and thus the welding quality can also be improved.
